Today's Additional Topic: The Politics Of Personal Attention
Reagan had "Trickle Down Economics"...
Bush 41 had "The New World Order"
Clinton had (hum..there were so many choice ones..) "Politics of Personal Destruction"
Bush 43 had "Compassionate Conservatism"
And now, President Obama is honing the tactic of " The Politics Of Personal Attention"
Though President Obama has been a controversial and often enigmatic character, one thing many can agree upon is his natural charm, charisma, and personable approach and casual demeanor as an enhancement to his political persona. Even many republicans commented after their meeting with him how "likeable" he is, some even commenting that they thought the Gold Standard for political sway and charm would always be Bill Clinton, but that President Obama has met, if not surpassed that. In this day and age of American Idol and MTV, it is no wonder how a young, hip, and "in tune" guy like Obama isn't Presidential material..regardless of how thin and porous his actual accomplishments and resume may be.
This charm, and Obama's perfection of its use, is both an enhancer, and also a weapon...a weapon to his detractors. Let’s just walk back a few months, and recall the personal propeller Joe The Plumber walked into as a result of engaging with then Candidate Obama...being the personable and "approachable" guy Obama portrayed, what would be wrong with a little "straight talk"..a little "meeting of the minds" between the two...and of course the thousands of media stalkers and cheerleaders in the Obama camp...we see how ole' Joe was vilified and eventually improperly investigated (if not illegally..and I thought the Democrats were so concerned about our private lives and information....i.e. The Patriot Act..unless of course it is a potential political embarrassment or challenge..as was Joe), and how he became a whipping boy and lightening rod for a great deal of editorial scrutiny and chastising...all because he engaged with an Engaging Guy...and said and challenged the wrong thing.
Take President Obama's most recent friendly and "engaging" stroll to the White House Press Office...bat it around with the Journalists..just one of the guys..and dare that a journalist would actually ask a question of the President...how dare he "engage" the Engager...that journalist, Rich Lowery I believe, was chastised and condemned for actually asking the President a question....the wrong question (..because lets face it, if it were a standard powder puff ice cream cone pitch from the normal sycophants.."How do you feel, Mr. President?..how are your kids adjusting to the new house, Mr., President?)..and the Engager engaged..and this time, with personal, natural and condescending interpersonal skills that castigated and scolded the journalist...it was a very personal moment..attention was meted out..but the kind you get when you might be the only recruit at boot camp that didn't quite get the last command..and you are the only one still standing ...in the wrong place..in the wrong uniform....yikes..
Now we see the same type of Personal Attention/Charm working..but this time against another private, albeit powerful and influential, person..and exhibiting a great deal of Personal Attention to him..Rush Limbaugh...and also Sean Hannity. Why would the President of the United States be so engaged and fixated on these two individuals, unless they posed a challenge, deserved some praise, or were going to become members of his cabinet...we can deduce its isn't the latter two...so we know they are a challenge and a concern for the President.
One can debate a great deal why Limbaugh and Hannity might be concerns for the President, and the broader liberal-esque wave descending on the American Body Politic, but it is the subtle and incipient way, with a complicit media and congress, that strikes me as nothing more than disturbing. We endured, and President Bush and his family personally endured, the likes of Keith Olberman, Bill Maher, and scores of Hollywood pseudo-intellectuals that vilified and snidely condemned the President in vile and in some cases despicable political assassination speech ("Mr. Bush...Shut the H*ll Up"..during Olberman's Edward R, Morrow wanna be moment), along with sitting congressional members, including then Senator Obama himself in his comments on our troops (implied, Bush's Troops) bombing of civilians, and air raiding villages...
As I mentioned in a previous Article, The Rules For Radicals , by Saul Alinsky describes and details ways the radical left must separate aspects of the social fabric and have them ostracized and marginalized to advance the liberal agenda...and President Obama, knowingly or otherwise, is playing quarterback on the Liberal agenda team, with the Alinsky book as the playbook. I believe this is an attempt by the President and his proponents to try to cast a death nail in the conservative movement by singling out, marginalizing, and attempting to vilify Conservative Talk Radio as a means for political dissent and opposition. I believe this is a prime motivator to pass the deceptively labeled "Fairness Doctrine".
I'll be keeping a clear and focused eye on this as it unfolds in the days and weeks to come. One thing is for sure...perception goes both ways, and if the GOP and the Conservatives play this right, Rush Limbaugh can be the poster child for the First Amendment and Free Speech...of which the Left has tried to monopolize as their cause..what they don't get is that it is an American Cause...regardless how much "Personal Attention" the President and a complicit media may impart to millions of their fellow citizens.
Post script: Correction-.."that journalist, Rich Lowery I believe, was chastised and condemned for actually asking the President a question"..it was Politico's Jonathan Martin
